Thermoforming Mold Material Selection & Inspection

Incoming Material Quality Check
In-house Thermoforming Mold Machining
• Rough Machining: The mold base undergoes CNC milling and turning, with a 0.2–0.5 mm stock allowance retained for final finishing.
• Precision Machining: The mold surfaces are finished by high-speed CNC milling, achieving a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.8μm. Drilling of heating and air holes is performed with positional and diameter tolerances maintained within ±0.05mm.
• Surface Treatment: Mirror polishing is applied to cavity surfaces as needed, particularly for transparent products.
• Dimensional Inspection: Key dimensions are verified using a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), with tolerances maintained within ±0.1mm.
• Mold Trial & Validation: A pilot run of 300–500 cycles is performed to assess product quality and demolding performance, ensuring no deformation, tearing, or burrs occur.
Mold Adjustment
Assembly and Testing
After the adjustment, we proceed with comprehensive mold commissioning to ensure optimal forming performance.
-

Temperature Calibration
• Heat the mold gradually in stages until it reaches the target forming temperature (e.g., 120–160°C for PP, depending on material requirements).
• Use an infrared thermometer to check surface temperature consistency; ensure variation is within ±3°C. -

Pressure Testing
• Run the machine under no-load conditions to test clamping pressure; check the pressure gauge for stability.
• Adjust the pneumatic system to meet process parameters (e.g., vacuum pressure ≥-0.08MPa). -

Stroke and Clearance Adjustment
• Set the clamping stroke to ensure uniform clearance between the upper and lower mold halves. Use feeler gauges to verify the clearance, with an allowable deviation of ≤ 0.1 mm.
• Fine-tune the demolding mechanism to ensure smooth actuation, with the ejection stroke precisely aligned to the product height. -

Post-Trial Product Inspection
• Check that the formed product is free from whitening, warping, short shots, or irregular edges.
• Verify dimensions against engineering drawings, ensuring critical tolerances are within ± 0.2 mm.

FAQ
-
Q: Can you design and manufacture thermoforming dies based on my design drawings?
A: Yes, we can design and manufacture molds based on your samples or design drawings. In addition, we offer professional suggestions and optimizations based on our manufacturing experience.
-
Q: Do you provide proofing services?
A: Yes. We provide sample proofing for customer approval. Based on your feedback, we will modify and optimize the mold until the final version fully meets your expectations.
-
Q: What is the MOQ for your custom thermoforming molds?
A: The MOQ is one complete mold set.
• For cup forming machines, this includes both the upper and lower molds.
• For multi-station thermoforming machines, the mold set typically consists of a forming mold, cutting mold, stacking mold, and optionally a punching mold (for four-station models only).
-
Q: How do you ensure mold accuracy and surface finish?
A: We carefully select materials based on the application, then carry out rough and precision machining, keeping a 0.1–0.2 mm allowance for finishing. Key mold surfaces are polished using our German machining center, which ensures positioning accuracy within 0.01 mm, delivering high dimensional precision and surface quality.
-
Q: Do you perform mold testing before delivery?
A: Yes. We conduct trial runs on our in-house machines to ensure proper forming and dimensional accuracy. Sample parts are sent for customer approval, and final delivery takes place only after confirmation.
-
Q: What is the typical service life of your plastic forming molds?
A: Under standard operating conditions, our molds deliver a service life of up to 10 million cycles (excluding wear parts). We also provide a three-year mold warranty for added assurance.
-
Q: Are your molds compatible with thermoforming machines from other brands?
A: Compatibility depends on your machine's configuration, but we can customize the mold dimensions and interfaces to ensure proper fit and function with most mainstream equipment.
-
Q: What is the lead time for custom thermoforming mold delivery?
A: The standard delivery time is 45 working days. In some cases, it may extend to 60 working days, mainly if there are delays in customer approval of the mold drawings. Timely confirmation helps ensure on-time delivery.
-
Q: Do you offer remote support?
A: Yes, we provide remote support including technical consultation available 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and video remote diagnostics for fast troubleshooting.
