Vacuum forming is a thermoforming process in which a heated plastic sheet is pulled over a mold using vacuum pressure to take its shape. It is a proven and cost-effective forming method, widely used for large, simple-shaped parts and low- to medium-volume production.

Advantages:

  • Cost-effective for low- and medium-volume runs
  • Quick mold setup and shorter production cycle
  • Suitable for large or simple geometries

Limitations:

  • Not ideal for deep or highly detailed parts
  • Lower dimensional precision compared with pressure or twin-sheet forming

Pressure forming uses compressed air to form a heated plastic sheet against the mold, achieving greater detail and tighter tolerances than vacuum forming. It is ideal for applications that require high precision, textured surfaces, or improved dimensional accuracy.

Advantages:

  • High detail and precision in formed parts
  • Support for textured or decorative surfaces
  • Capability for complex shapes and medium- to high-volume production

Limitations:

  • Higher tooling cost compared with vacuum forming
  • More complex and costly equipment requirement
